    Compress Images

This function compresses the raw native DICOM files. The default extension for RadPix compressed files is *.RAD.

RadPix can compress the images to save space on your hard disk. Compressions of about 50% can be achieved with a 'zip' compression algorithm. The entire image is compressed [including the header] and it can be uncompressed as well. The compression is lossless, which means that the original image can be recovered exactly. In addition, a preview bitmap is placed at the front of the compressed file. This speeds up Image Browsing and allows you to preview the image using other software. Compressing the image also allows RadPix to save user modified Window and Level values.

Please note that there are many types of DICOM files and we have only sampled a very small set of them. When you start working with a new type of image, please open and test the compressed image before you delete the original uncompressed image. In case of trouble with the compressed image, please email an example of the image to info@radpix.com so we can update the software to work with the new image type.

Note: Images are only compressed when they are saved or when you choose to compress an entire image. Also note that changed Window and Level settings can only be saved in compressed images.
